One of the many bars around Purdue, but this is easily the one with the most history and tradition. This is always one of the busiest bars on campus, especially on weekends with sporting events as there are quite a few alumni that love to come back to this place. Some students don't like this bar initially because it looks really old and almost run down at times, but this is one of those places that grows on you as you go back more and more. There are two levels here, the main floor which you can tell has seen a lot of people due to the writing on the walls, and the upstairs which provides more area for seating. They have a wide variety of drinks and a fun atmosphere. There's also free popcorn and the infamous birthday shot. One of the latest places to open for Breakfast Club, but one of my favorites because they usually have the hardest drinks on campus.

I love this place. Yeah it gets crowded - if you don't like crowded bars, go somewhere else! You're on a college campus, if you go to a bar that doesn't get crowded, is it really that cool to begin with? (Chumley's not included in that, that place rules). As for large amounts of "greeks" that go there, don't forget Purdue has the 3rd largest greek system in the country. Who gives a shit anyway? I won't bother you. I mean, they won't bother you. Strong shots, pretty cheap drinks, and I think the only place I've seen that has stainless steel urinals and toilets. You won't find drink specials here, because let's face it, they don't need specials to get people in the door. The scum on the floor, the burnt popcorn, and the sweaty college kids are the real draw here! I like it, I love it, and miss it like hell.

Perhaps the best way for me to describe Harry's Chocolate Shop is that it is America in bar form. Friendly folks, efficient bartenders, and drinks that pack a punch. What this place lacks in aesthetics, it more than makes up for in charm. The atmosphere is inviting and unpretentious, and it doesn't matter if you're 21 or 101, you'll feel welcome there. If you're anywhere near West Lafayette, Harry's is a must-visit because it is the quintessential college bar. Go Ugly Early to this speakeasy turned Purdue legend today.

Vintage Purdue tradition. For best results get about 6-8 or more peeps and lock down the fishbowl. Nice, interesting drinks. Probably only four stars on it's own merits, but gets a point tacked on for classic-ness.

Godddamn Harrys. Fat chicks, puke in the urinals, "The Fridge", popcorn and piss on the stairs, jack'n'cokes, smokes, Tater, "SO GOOD!, SO GOOD! SO GOOD!", what's not to love? I once heard "Livin' on a Prayer" 3 times in a fucking row here. Goddamn fucking Harrys!!! If this bar were anywhere else it would be condemned and not worthy of any stars what-so-ever. So, I give 4 stars for the "ambiance".

Harry's is across the street from Rawls Hall at Purdue, where my lovely s/o currently spends most of his days (and occasional nights). Luckily, he and fellow students enjoy letting off some steam by drinking copious amounts of cheap beer at Harry's. I get to take advantage of this when I join them. It's a fun place - I have not been there yet when it's really busy or crowded, so my impression is based on a more relaxed off-peak hours atmosphere. The beer? I am still getting used to how cheap beer is out here. $6.00 for a pitcher? That's craziness. I have paid $6.00 for one beer before. I guess this is because you have to drink a whole pitcher yourself to get even the slightest bit intoxicated. Cheap beer is like yummy flavored water. Oh and the food. It's not bad. Granted, it is really bad for you...but at least it tastes good when you clog your arteries. Jalepeno poppers? Fried, and delicious. Chicken fries? Fried, and very tasty. French fries? Fried, of course, and fantastically greasy and crunchy. I also had the classic Italian sub, which is not fried, but very good as well. I know I'll be back, if only so I can have a few moments with my s/o over cheap beer.

A genuine and tested Purdue tradition that has stood the test of time. Going into Harry's you will see how long it has truly been since they have remodeled or updated this bar. If you are an alumnus of Purdue and have been back to Harry's you will appreciate how resistant to time this bar is. You will probably find the same people, decorations, and juke box as when you left. When I was in school I never realized how much of a dive bar this really is compared to the other bars (Brother's, Jake's, Roxy's, Where Else, Pete's, and AJ Wingers) but was set it apart was the atmosphere and strong drinks (Bombay & Tonic here was my favorite). Harry's was my favorite bar by far on the Purdue campus. I had alot of good times and met alot of good people here while I was a student. Some people have a special little place in their heart for Harry's while others could care less. It is one of those bars and if you never give it a chance you will never know. Of course, you never know who you will meet......

Harry's is a Purdue institution in itself. While the place is dirty, it has the best drinks on campus. Read the other reviews for details but basically the place was a speak easy and used the Chocolate Shop name as a cover. I usually left Harry's as the last stop of the night. My friends and I would get our fill at other, cheaper bars and then end the night with couple strong drinks from Harry's (read: Green Dragon, Long Island, White Russian) It's true that the bar tenders can be less than friendly but if you treat them well you will get a good return on your investment. A little known secret about Harry's is that it has a decent, cheap daily lunch special... great for starting some day drinking on a Thursday or Friday. As far as the food goes, Harry's is a greasy spoon but what else do you want from a place made for drinking.
(4)
Erik V.
Go f*cking Ugly Early! Damn I love this bar. Here's why: #1. Its a speak easy (still use the trap door for kegs). #2. They serve these amazingly STRONG drinks Baltimore Zoo, Green Dragon, and Grateful Dead. Order one and watch the bartender literally lift up 6 bottles of liquor flowing into your drink. It's madness. #3. The music kicks ass. "Poor some sugar on me" "She's a lady" "Pussy Cat Pussy Cat" "Hey blackwater" #4. Free popcorn! #5. Best for last.....the free birthday shot Many nights forgotten and tabs left open at this lovely establishment. Long Live Harry's!

Although it may be one of the more expencive campus bars, were talking cents, it makes up for it with quality drinks. Your mix drinks will be full of alcohol, and your popcorn fresh. Best staff too! Best time to go is Friday after class. You cannot have a birthday without having Harry's Birthday shot.

Honestly it took until Feb 2007 until this place got reviewed? That says more to me regarding the quality of yelp then it does Harry's. I have a love hate thing going on here. I love it since I can get served before everyone else, I hate it because of everyone else.

The nostalgia of this place lies in the friends that you make when going to destress after a hard week of classes. I didn't think much of this place when I was at Purdue, but looking back it is a great place that holds great memories. I remember it was almost lost due to a fire at the neigboring record store. I like going back to meetup with fellow alumn.

I am a fan of the drinks and the atmosphere when it is not totally packed. Unless you like going out to not have a conversation or a seat do not go Thursday-Saturday night. I'm scared to eat here, but I have been told that the food is good. I prefer it for an early evening drink, as I don't care for the late night crowded of frat boys. I do love the popcorn. The bathroom is terrifying, but I suppose that adds to its charm.
(3)
Brian A.
Harry's wasn't even one of my favorite bars at Purdue, but it gets a good review from me for nostalgia if nothing else. Harry's has to be the oldest bar at Purdue. Ask old timers who went here and they'll remember it. It's crowded and smoky (but not smoky much longer :D ), but you'll have a blast if you're with friends. I celebrated my 21st birthday here and I wouldn't want to do it anywhere else. Make sure you get a 21st birthday shot here. It's horrible, but you'll have a good story. Harry's was also the destination for all my bar sprints I did during schoolwork. Sprint from Grissom to Harry's, down a drink, and sprint back to Grissom as fast as you can. See who gets the best time.

Fun fun place on game day

I used to work here, and honestly, it was probably one of my favorite jobs. While it was a pain in the ass whenever it was crowded or late, the cordial, drunken nature of the people that stopped by made up for it. It's not like other bars at Purdue where people go out to be seen. People go to Harry's to have a good time. I love the popcorn, the bartenders are awesome (my favorite is Laine), and the best time to go is right before closing time. Your Purdue experience is incomplete if you do not stop by Harry's Chocolate Shop at least once (and buy a shirt)!

I never saw the appeal of this place. I can only imagine it is so popular by name only. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool bar and has a great vibe when it's not busy, but when it is busy it is STUPID crowded in there. Like, if there was a fire, most people would die crowded. I don't know about you, but I like to spend time talking to my friends when I go out, not smashed up against someones back or waiting in line to pee.
(2)
Amanda W.
I never understood the appeal of Harry's while I was Purdue. Normally I love dingy, dive type bars. But Harry's never did it for me. Maybe it was the copius amounts of frat boys and sorostitutes that hang out their on the weekends. The only time I slightly enjoyed Harry's was during a weekday during summertime when it wasn't crowded.

My absolute favorite bar int he world. I know I have a ton of memories after going to college here, but honestly, a great casual bar. This place has so much tradition and history in it. I am sad with the changes that the campus is going through from a bar-perspective, but glad Harry's is weathering the storm. They are willing to accomodate all odd requests (like buying a sleeve of the plastic cups your drinks come in is $6.00 (I think), or taking a picture behind the bar with the famous glass mirror in the background). Every time I come back to campus, I make sure I stop here. Oh, and we ordered a pitcher of beer, it was $7.00. That's not a special, just how much it costs. Great place!
(5)
Amy J.
You know, it's a Purdue legend... So that's the really fun part. You should know going in that it gets REALLY crowded. But during the weekends they open the upstairs which helps a lot. The best part: friendly staff and bartenders, and unique drinks like the Green Dragon (that are strong, so be careful). But the very best part: the music, the scene. Listening to Living on a Prayer and singing it at the top of your lungs when you're 21 with a bar full of college kids really couldn't be more fun. Granted, I'm older now and the place would probably drive me crazy, but in college, it's such a fun place. Music is the best.

Cockroaches, Bitchy bartenders/waiters/waitress, shitty food, drunk Sorostitues, Dumb drunk frat F***ers. Its a Purdue classic. IIt is impossible to make it through 4 years with out spending a little(or a lot) of time there, im not sure why, but its impossible.

Dunno why the other reviewer gave Harry's a 1 star. While its true about what he said, its an institution. Like Cactus on Thursdays. That alone makes its a 5 star. Well that and the fact that everything thats not beer tastes like pure alcohol. Whats not to love.

GO UGLY EARLY! If you see these t-shirts you are passing a beloved guest from Harry's. Do not confuse the shirts with down the street "No Uglies Allowed" because then you are at Jake's. Oh my Alma Mater. Purdue campus bars! The love we have shared for all of the years and the memories made! Harry's Chocolate Shop: - A Purdue Campus Bar - great for lunch, beer, hanging out - free popcorn machine always popping - Alumni Bar - No smoking inside. Thank you! - Upstairs there is a huge round booth table great for large groups. To get it on a weekend I have no idea how besides to tell you arrive in the morning and glue some in your group to it. You will hear people call this "The Fishbowl." I don't know why. It just is! Accept it and love it. - TVs and sports, why watch the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup at B-Dubs when you can go to Harry's? Duh! - I THINK they are open 30 minutes later than other downtown and campus bars. Hard to say from when I was out at bars at that hour. I was too intoxicated or now am too old to remember? This is good times. Popcorn late night? Score! - drinks are delicious and stronger here; maybe $5 instead of $3 for the area; but the quality, quantity, alcohol poured, cherries, real juices, and all that drink yum stuff makes it amazing! - a couple owns this bar - the owners are excellent to Purdue current and alumni; alumni often are seen here if both Purdue grads with their wedding party for the classic, behind the bar, wedding party photo - the owner's are hospitable to clubs and for example; I once called for St. Thomas Theology on Tap to use the upstairs on a Tuesday evening for two hours for a group of 21-35ish year old students to have some drinks, fellowship, and listen to Father bring church to the bar. They close off upstairs for groups desiring to use this space. I would say "rent out" but for Purdue clubs, groups, and needs such as above, it's free and just a phone call from the right group for the right event. You will get a return phone call and a yes. Thus, I like the owners. They have a traditional Purdue bar and support a good cause and provide a great place/space per honorable request. Overall 5: Traditional, Alumni, Purdue bar, popcorn, drinks, televisions, fun, great service, great crowd, less rowdy with more older graduate/doctoral level students or younger alumni. I love Harry's for all the right reasons. Here is a toast (Ahem, please raise your glass and "go ugly early" with me!): For all the times I will remember forever, making memories, with some of the finest people I will never ever forget for a lifetime! ...CHEERS! *clink*

I remember Harry's being the bar for all the rich Greek-life students. Not really my gig, but they had yummy (and expensive) drinks. My best friend was kicked out once for being too drunk on her 21st. That's about it. More for alums.

Classic downtown Lafayette nightlife for sure! What you want, this place has it! For starters this place makes one killer mixed drink! Who doesn't like more liquor in their drinks?! The entertainment, action and people here make this place a stand out and the perfect place to close out to have a night cap! The owner here is normally on the premise until 11pm or so and is very friendly to have a chat with! I'll certainly be back on in!

"Hmm where the heck is the Chocolate" I said as I walked into this bar. I came here with 3 friends who said that this is a Purdue staple and I wanted to experience it. That being said.....ugh. Really? The beer choices were poor...which I understand isn't a huge concern on a college campus...and the food choices were even worse. Everything was greasy or fried....the pizza was bland and stale tasting and there was a cockroach on our table that came out of the wood and said hi a few times during my meal. Talk about wanting to take another bite of your food after that. Although it didn't really take the roach to make me put the food down. bleh. If this place gets more than a 1 star for food from someone, I feel very bad for their food experiences in the world. If this place gets more than 3 stars for being a bar....I'd say you need to get out more.
(1)
B L.
I like the wooden bar, decent liquor selection and number of taps, beer selection is average. My friends $5 burger looked great. My $20 wings, though, sucked, and Harry's is known for their wings. The sauce tasted like really potent soy sauce. By the fourth wing I was not eating out of enjoyment. EDIT: It is worth noting that the service was excellent.

There isn't much to say about Harry's that most West Lafayette natives don't already know. The food is surprisingly good given its notoriety as a dive bar, including the various finger foods you can order until 11pm even on fairly busy weekend nights. As far as bars go, some of the bartenders are probably the best West Lafayette has, but that isn't a high bar to beat. The atmosphere is "classic" but it can get very crowded and the bouncers routinely let far too many people in. Of course, that's probably one of the reasons why we go.
(4)
Ashley H.
Harry's gives me warm fuzzies. Haven't found better, stronger drinks for the price anywhere else (and I kinda hope I never do). This place can't be beat as far as college dive bars go. I felt at home here as an undergrad and always feel at home when I return as an alumna. Get a Colorado Root Beer or a Baltimore Zoo, some fried banana peppers, and have yourself some free popcorn. Go ugly early!

GO UGLY EARLY!! All hail the Mecca for drinking at Purdue University!! All other bars pale in comparison to Harry's chocolate shop.. This bar has more history then every bar on Purdue's campus combined. I highly suggest ordering a mixed drink or a double shot of liquor because they pour incredibly stiff here and you get your money's worth in two drinks! After spending tens of thousands of dollars at this bar throughout my college career I can easily tell you it's a win-win every time you go. If you're a local come on holidays such as Christmas to enjoy all the students being gone and all your old friends getting wasted

Crowded on Friday nights, but good bartenders, cooks and atmosphere make up for it. Best tenderloin sammich I know of.

Laziest review ever....it's old, it's a tradition, & it's worth a visit. To elaborate, Harry's is cramped, smells like stale beer, & awesome. Just go, at least once.

Come for the cheap booze. Stay for the tradition. Harry's is as integral to Lafayette as Purdue.
(4)
Jay J.
I have had some of the best times of my life in this bar. It's dirty, smelly, and covered in graffiti, but I'll wager that this is one of the best bars at Purdue. So many blackouts here thanks to their overly-strong drinks and relatively low prices. Yes, come here to get drunk. Don't come here for a nice quiet evening with the parents.

Every part of West Lafayette may change in the coming years, but there are really only three businesses that I hope to God stay open - Triple X, Von's and Harry's. They are all part of the Purdue experience and have molded the histories and experiences of generation upon generation of Boilermakers. The first time I visited Harry's was probably in the fall of 2000 when I turned 21 and after spending Grand Prix there yesterday, I can tell you that the place has not changed in the slightest. And holy crap, Lane (sp?) still works there. Amazing. Cheap drinks, Purdue memorabilia, Bears games in the fall, Blackhawks and Cubs the rest of the year, fantastic jukebox and bathrooms that are not totally destroyed.
(5)
Michelle Q.
Harry's staff was excellent but there is NEVER enough seating to eat. It is a game of hovering over tables and ordering a quick bite. The 4 star was earned from the Newcastle on tap. Food was ok and the price is cheap. But messy so definitely wait til you are at a table

There she lay, her auburn hair in a mess. All bundled up against the fishtank at 3 am. Now I come from Larkin street out there in SF so I know how to pick up an Asian. But this was literal.....girl was on the ground. My sisters wedding had commenced and I was on my way back to the hotel, and trussssst me bra I looked every inch of 26 in that suit. Which is coincidentally the age that I lied about being. Bro's, lets go into code here. I was clocked at 14 minutes. From order, to delivery...just ask Lane...he will tell you what a slime ball I am. I had no fucking clue how small a Hundai was until I had one leg in each wheel well while my butt cheeks scanned through the preset radio stations. Damn. Glad they had handicapped parking. I would go back just for the drinks for real brah.

Fun place to go before the game. I went to the MI State / Purdue game. Had the wings, fries, homemade chips. GOOOOOD STUFF. You have to try the Long island. Tasty. It's just min from Mackey. You can't help but have fun.

Harry's is a classic spot to grab a drink at any time. Located a stone's throw from Purdue's campus, the bar offers good drinks, a fun atmosphere, and history lessons if you care to indulge. Harry's is a popular bar and can get crowded at times, but that's part of why it's fun. Many walks of life gather at Harry's, and nearly all have one thing in common; a love for Purdue. I will say that Harry's has a decent kitchen. They have lunch specials throughout the week. Their double cheeseburger is one of the best on campus, and is on special Friday afternoons. Also, their jalapeno poppers are excellent. Other items I've had are fair/good. I'd say go for the mixed drinks and if you get a little hungry, give it a try. Regardless, you will always be entertained at Harry's. Pros: Good mixed drinks, fun atmosphere, lot's of unique decorations/pictures Cons: Not the cleanliest of establishments, poor beer selection

The best college bar period. I had my first legal drink here and so did my dad. This is a Purdue institution. If you can drink 4+ long islands I'm very impressed with you. Pretty good wings and bar food. When I think of college I think of Harry's. Breakfast club here was some of the best times EVER.
(5)

My FAVORITE bar on campus. You know that bar on Cheers? This is what Harry's is all about. If you are newly turned 21 year or a alumni coming back for Homecoming, you feel like you're at home. Maybe it's the fresh popcorn or maybe it's the Baltimore Zoos, whatever it is Harry's will always be my favorite place on campus. Although drink prices are a little more pricey than the other bars on the street, but it is totally worth the extra $2 for the great service and dive bar atmosphere. Harry's Chocolate Shop is also home to some of the most delicious bar food on campus. There is nothing like leaving your Friday afternoon class and heading over to Harry's for a Long Island and some cheese fries. If you are ever on campus- Harry's is a must. Go Ugly Early!

Ryan H.
One of my favorite bars in the area. You don't really learn to appreciate this bar until you're a bit older than just 21 or 22. During my later portion of my Purdue undergrad and my alumni years did I really start to enjoy this bar and become a regular. It's a tight, packed, popular dive bar with great food, service, atmosphere, and a great spot to get watch the boilers. I wish it was a bit bigger downstairs, and I wish the upstairs floor wasn't always so sticky that it literally pulls my shoes off if I stand to long in one spot. Very loud atmosphere so if crowds and noise are not your thing then pass on this spot. I've had a lot of great nights here with some great friends and strangers.
(5)
Michael C.
Harry's is guaranteed fun. Coming here with friends on the weekends will be some of the most fun experiences I will ever have. The drinks are strong, a bit pricey compared to the other bars, but this place is a Purdue institution and is required during your stay in West Lafayette.

Best beer in town! Try the pizza. And the chili. And the flounder. And the White Russian. Say HI to Nichole and Hershel!
(5)

Well, if you are in town (West Lafayette) - You can't skip Harry's ... The "Chocolate Shop" (go ugly early) to meet Students and Alumni :-) Right across the Purdue Student Union - Boiler UP !!! (OK, I have to admit - there's no real alternative in town ;-) )

Out of all the campus bars at Purdue, Harry's will always be my favorite. It is known as the most traditional bar, and the alumni bar. In comparison to other bars, Harry's does not have drink specials. But, it's drinks are at a fair and consistent price. For the most part $3.75 for normal wells, $4.75 for specialty drinks. Shots are most of the time 2 for $7.50. The food served here is delicious! I love the homemade chips, they are really good! Some of my favorite drinks are: - White Russian - Baltimore Zoo - Alabama Slammer - Scooby Snack (shot) Harry's is always the best place to come for service, and just to have a good time. They have a jukebox which typically plays the same songs, and to be honest if they changed it would extract from the Harry's experience.

Coming from Chicago, I stumbled in Harry's Chocolate shop late on a Friday night with a group of friends and family, not even realizing this was a staple around Purdue. Walking up to it, I had no idea it was even a bar. I naively thought it was legitimately, a chocolate shop. ((Clearly I didn't do my research)). Since we were there during spring break, college students were fairly scarce. However, Harry's was still packed. Since it was late, and we had already eaten, we forewent the menu items and went straight for the booze. The prices are fairly standard, and they have a small but good selection of beers, and a fully stocked bar. And like previous reviews have said, yes, the drinks were pretty strong! Service was decent. Although, given that it was pretty slammed the night we were there, we encountered a slight wait at the bar. In terms of the atmosphere, I imagine it's more of a younger crowd ((during school seasons)) since it's located on the Purdue campus. Harry's has a glorified dive bar feel. It's not the classiest of bars, but it definitely has character worth checking out. Overall - A solid 3 stars.
(3)
Katherine T.
A must if you're on the Purdue campus. It's a classic bar that's is much more low key than the others. Their drinks are strong and burgers are delicious. There is seating, but not much of it. It is a smaller place, but a great one to go to if you're looking for just a drink or two during the day. The people who work here are friendly and welcoming.
(5)
Kinsey C.
As far as bars go, Harry's isn't the greatest, but it's a Purdue institution so I'm a fan! The drinks here are always strong which I'm a fan of. I hate paying $7 for a watered down drink. It's usually pretty crowded in here after 10, so be prepared to stand unless you can snag one of the few booths and tables. I think the service here is pretty quick too which I appreciate. All in all: if you're visiting Purdue, you need to stop by Harry's for a drink (and some free popcorn!)

What can I possibly say to describe Harry's Chocolate Shop? Harry's makes you feel like a real Boilermaker. The true, honest meaning of a Purdue Boilermaker, long before it was just a shot dropped into a beer. Now I've never been the school spirited type. I was into dyeing my hair purple, being angry at my parents, punk music, and Star Wars in high school, not excatly the prototype for cheery school spirit. I have to admit, I was wary of going to Harry's my first time, but Harry's became my favorite bar on Purdue's campus. Harry's does not have drink specials, and they will laugh at you when you ask. Just know that they have mixed drinks for $3.75, and they are STRONG. Harry's has the biggest pitchers on campus, and the nicest bartenders once you get to know them. Free popcorn at night, and don't even think about trying to write on the walls anymore. You'd have to be *wink-wink* super sneaky to write the address of your crew house on the wall by the smoking lounge exit. Harry's has amazing chili, and if you ever find yourself with a break between classes, don't hesitate to grab some. Harry's gets really packed on game days, Breakfast Club days, weekends, and Thursday nights. The jukebox plays the same music every day, and you would look dumb not to join in during the chorus of "Sweet Caroline." No matter how cool, you are, the atmosphere takes over, and you well up with Purdue Pride. I wish there were more places I could feel at home in like I do at Harry's.

My wife is the Purdue grad but we make but this is a must when we come back every other year the the ND / Purdue game. There no better way to start our day than with a tenderloin sandwich, fries, and several Colorado Root beers then off to the tailgates. I look forward to biannual pilgrimage and miss our tradition with the break in ND/Purdue series.

Ah, Harry's - a Purdue staple etched with so much history. But seriously, everything I sat on had some lovebirds' initials etched on the wood - everywhere! Overall, the bar had a good feel, although the upstairs wasn't when we stopped by in December, probably due to lack of traffic during the holidays. The bar had a good selection of beer on tap. We ordered wings and fries, which for bar food, was fairly decent. So if you're ever in West Lafayette, you gotta go to Harry's to make it a complete trip!

Overrated based on my experience. I think even the salads are fried. Uncomfortable seating. Service was mediocre.

So happy to see that Harry's is still here. Better selection of draft then when i was here...................oh so many years ago. 312 for me. Trying to locate my carved initials on the wall.............now where did I do that? Great corner location. Great place to sit and watch the day go by. Wish The Stabes was still down the street!

No visit to Purdue is complete without a visit to Harry's Chocolate Shop. It's even a point of interest on Wikipedia's page on West Lafayette, IN ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We… ). Yes, it is that famous and it is that bar that anyone who has ever gone to Purdue or lived in the area knows about. They don't need specials and they don't need gimmicks because no matter what there will always be a line out the door even when it's 0 degrees outside. Harry's knows this so they were nice enough to install outdoor heater lamps in the roofing. Anyways, reading through the reviews it sounds as though those who did not attend Purdue do not understand the allure of Harry's. Well yelpers here's why this bar is most students favorite: it's history and it's drinks and by drinks I mean liquor, if you're looking for a great IPA go to Chumley's. Forget about the food, it's hit or miss but personally I think it's good as any other bar on campus. (Don't order the buffalo sauce, pretty sure it's pure soy sauce). This is the place you go to with your friends on a Friday afternoon. This is the place you to go reminisce with other alumni when you come back to school to recruit. This is the bar where the drinks are stronger and cheaper than most places you will ever go to and actually taste good. This is the place that if there is a snow day, you hike it to Harry's no matter the weather condition and share a wonderful day off with friends. It's the last stop for most people on a weekend night, any bar crawl and most importantly any birthday. That being said if you are older than most college students, don't go here past 11. The place turns into a video on college drinking 101 filled with 21 and 22 year olds and is so loud you most likely won't be able to hold a conversation as everyone will be singing along to the music. Yes, you too will find yourself at some point singing along to "Don't Stop Believing", "Sweet Caroline" or even John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Finally, like all those have mentioned, Harry's pops their own popcorn in an old-fashioned popper. However, others failed to mention that sometimes it can be very salty but it doesn't matter because it's Harry's. It's the perfect snack as you drink or walk back home after a fun night with friends. The worst part about Harry's is trying to find a table on a busy night. There are tables downstairs as well as upstairs but most likely you'll be standing. Upstairs is cleaner but isn't usually open during lunch on weekdays. Speaking of clean, the bathrooms upstairs are much nicer than those downstairs. One last final note: I've worn my Harry's shirt across the country and there is always someone that recognizes it and gives me a friendly Boiler Up! Because it is that LEGEND...(wait for it)...DARY.

All bias aside, still a hole in the wall that's a staple Purdue bar. It's been years since I've been at Purdue (though only two since my last drink at Harry's) and there's no noticeable change here at all. Thing to note, GREAT long island iced teas, LOW college town prices, great crowd, and great music. You really can't beat the atmosphere of this bar. Why just three stars then? Well it's still the dirty old bar it has always been. Let's just say when you go and have a drink and food at noon and see a few bugs around... well it's just Harry's. So all bias aside, I give Harry's a 3, but I'll always stop by for a drink if I'm nearby.

No visit to Purdue is complete without a trip to Harry's! This place has more Character than any bar I've ever been too. At first glance it looks like a real dive, but as you look around you realize that each part of the decor has been added over time and probably has a story behind it. There are names and dates scratched into almost every surface on the first floor which just adds to the character. Five Things that make this Bar the Best at Purdue: 1) The Music 2) The drinks ( Be sure to try the Harry's Signature LONG ISLAND, Green Dragon, or Baltimore Zoo) 3) The Character 4) Free Popcorn 5) The People - Everyone is at Harry's to have a good time! GO UGLY EARLY!!!!

Every campus has *that* bar that everyone knows and alumni still yearn for, and I think at Purdue, this is it. Order a green dragon (or mind eraser, if you're having that kind of night), wash it down with free popcorn, and go sit in the fishbowl. Rinse, repeat, come back for homecoming and do it again.

The food is OK. You can't beat the beer prices or the mixed drinks. I highly recomend the Greatefull Dead or the Baltamore Zoom

My favorite campus bar, and it should be yours too. Harry's is the type of bar the deserves a 5-star rating. Sure, they never have 'specials' (except for the occasional $2 PBR can) but it's a bar that lives on prestige. Harry's seems to always have been the most expensive bar out of a whopping four-bar selection but you get what you pay for. The more you go there, the better they will treat you and the stronger the drinks will get. Unlike the other bars, Harry's can't really be classified as a 'Greek' bar or an 'Independent' bar. It's just a dive to have a great time with friends and interact with people from all over the places. This is where you will usually see Purdue alums hanging out and enjoying their time reminiscing. A couple of tips: the Gorgonzola covered chips are to die for and are a really cheap snack while you're drinking. Get a group of friends together sometime and call ahead and tell them you are doing the 'Great Indoorsman'. They will let you in about 10 minutes before they open and you can take pictures and write on the walls but you have to stay inside all day, drinking! You can park across the street behind Rawls at night for free without getting towed, but the drinks are damn strong so you shouldn't be driving afterwards anyways. *The baltimore zoo is too sweet.. try a Colorado Root Beer or a Red Stag and Coke instead

This is my favorite bar on campus. If you're looking for cheap alcohol or specials, don't come here. However, if you're looking for great service, good music, a great atmosphere, and a chill time, Harry's is your place. Their mixed drinks are larger than the others on campus and much better. Some specialties are the Baltimore Zoo and the Green Dragon. They also have great shots (you have to ask to see a shot menu). Be careful of the Birthday shot though! I also like Harry's because their food is great. Their turkey melt is one of my favorites. Their menu is pretty extensive and reasonably priced for bar food. Did I mention they have delicious free popcorn too?

Harry's Chocolate Shop is the ultimate classic Purdue bar. Not only are their drinks strong but the food is AMAZING- you should try the the chicken pasta salad. They even give out free popcorn at all times. Family owned and the owner's are there a lot and are so nice and fun. If you go to Purdue you have to experience Harry's or your trip won't be the same!

I can't legitimately give this bar four or five stars, b/c I am and IU alum and loyalty is top priority. Considering it is a Purdue bar, I would be going against all things Cream and Crimson if I admitted liking a bar in West Lafayette more than my home turf in Bloomington. That being said, this is THE coolest bar in W. Lafayette, celebrating YEARS of history and college antics. The building itself is doused in an array of liquors that have long since absorbed into the wooden walls and floor boards. Names of students are scrawled in every wall and bar stool including my sister's and husband's. B/c I'm an IU chick, I find this tradition silly but sadly have to admit I am depressed I am not technically "allowed" to write my own name. :) I love the atmosphere of Harry's. It's rowdy on every football weekend where the kids celebrate "breakfast club" and dress up like it's Halloween before a home football game. My sister's photos from Breakfast Club are fun and outrageous and it is one tradition I am definitely jealous IU doesn't share. The drinks are priced well, with happy hour specials and game day treats. I have to say, all in all, if you want a seat, get there early b/c the chocolate shop's desserts bring the fans in hordes and otherwise, you'll be standing in the most crowded bar in town hoping to avoid getting ran over. ENJOY and GO IU!!

This is THE Purdue bar. Very old (oldest on campus opened before prohibition), very dive-like, but very fun. It gets very packed on weekend nights, but thats the college scene. Its great in the afternoons and early evenings with friends, and their food is very good.... get the IU Student Roadkill fries, and a Rueben sandwich. As for drinking the Baltimore Zoo is hands down the drink to get, the green dragon is also quite good. They also have free popcorn for you drunk munchie needs.

After 3 years at Purdue, I finally visited Harry's Chocolate Shop for the first time last month and was pleasantly surprised. I had anticipated the place to be full of bros and hoes, which I realize is unavoidable in a college town; however, I find Harry's to be charming. Its speakeasy history and vintage feel make it endearing. Drinks and food are reasonably priced. Popcorn is free. And, it's just a good dive bar. It's especially fun when overrun by the College of Pharmacy Class of 2011 bar crawl/last day festivities.

Harry's has been around a long time and is very popular with students, Purdue faculty, and locals. I've never had a bad meal there, and they serve the best wings you'll find anywhere. On a recent trip, my friend had the chicken taco salad and said it was the best one she'd ever had.

There a great lunch specials throughout the week. I came in for a burger one Friday. It was a tad greasy, but it was still delicious as it was washed down with a Baltimore Zoo.

This is my favorite bar in West Lafayette. I love the "GO UGLY EARLY" slogan that accompanies much of Harry's apparel and the history behind the shop is quite fun as well. The drinks are expensive but strong. What really kept me coming back to Harry's was the atmosphere; I love the wooden booths and the fact that there is a second bar & seating area upstairs. The lack of smoking on the premises helps too (although that is a city-wide rule now). Try the Green Dragon.

Very cool bar, cheap drinks, and amazing service... What else needs to be said??? The bartender was probably one of the nicest I have ever seen anywhere.... The place was busy but not really pack so you can move around. I will be going back anytime that I just want to have some drinks....

I always have fond memories of Harry's because of their Chicken fries and college days and it's just always such a happening place. For me, Harry's is the campus bar. We came back here recently after not going for about 12 years and things didn't change much which is always comforting :) Prices seem to be a little more inflated than I remembered but my memory doesn't always serve me well regarding bars lol :) Free popcorn too - always a delicious treat!

The best bar in the Midwest. Just shut up and go to Harry's.

Cramped bar they have an upstairs. There's not much to move around in this place. Had a drink and left, can beer in $2.75 witch I found out when I got a can that I didn't even order. Oh well the place was to packed. Went back on a Saturday night the place was packed again, so that has to say something about the place, I hust think this area should maybe get a few new bars so then you don't have to stand on everyone when your at these bars on this strip. Talking with some of the people that were at the bar they said this was not busy and that it gets way more crowded in here witch I find hard to believe, with it been as cramped as it was I was surprised there there no fights. I have to give it up to the bartenders in this place they can make some drinks and are very good at multi-tasking, (they're able to make more then one drink at a time) (taking the next order) you don't have to wait long for a drink here even when it seems like everyone is trying to get a drink at the bar. I had them at 3 stars but after May day (may 1st) I had to add another star.

A Purdue staple. It is always crowded on almost every night. Neat atmosphere with all the intials on the walls. Kind of expensive but they drinks are usually pretty strong.

I don't really see the appeal of this place. Drinks are aok, free popcorn is sorta a plus. There are some okay people here, but mainly college types. I used to like the food until I had a COCKROACH ON A CHICKEN WING. I just about ate it and noticed some movement on the wing as I was lifting it to my mouth. Reaction of staff to this? "We spray for them monthly...just sprayed, they go ape-shit when we spray". Also, had part of the ceiling fall into my food on another trip there. I would never ever ever eat there again...really should be condemned. Don't get me wrong, I love a dive bar. Harrys is not a dive bar, it is a frat bar that the owners let fall apart. Shi7 music, etc. If you are the average college type or just want a strong drink when it isn't crowded or other places have closed, you wont be disappointed. If you like dive bars, you will be disappointed as this has none of the actual ambience of a dive bar. It is just dirty, infested with cockroaches and falling apart.

If you want to get away from the true college student bars, then Harry's is the place to go. With its dive feel, it's darker atmosphere, and it's regular customers, Harry's is a place to go when you want to sit, talk, and have good, strong drinks with friends. Harry's can get pretty crowded on the weekends. There are two floors with plenty of seating, but at times, even that is not enough to satisfy all the customers. The bartenders are great. The drinks are more expensive than other bars, but they are also much stronger and in bigger cups. Pitchers of Old Style are $5, which is something that I find myself getting a lot. Also, their legendary Baltimore Zoos and Colorado Rootbeers are fantastic; all ranging around $5-$6. The music played in the bar gets a little repetitive after a while, but there are always some loud, drunk girls singing "Don't Stop Believing" and guys surrounding them loving every minute of it. Over the years, people have etched their names into the tables, chairs, and walls, and that is something that I find very attractive about the bar. Oh, did I mention there is free popcorn constantly?

Best bar in all the land...except when invaded with GDIs on the the weekend.

Yet another Purdue institution. It's grimier than most but the vibe still can't be beat. I'm knocking off a star for the extent of the grime and some a hole bartender that I had to fight with to get a replacement beer when I was given a skunked Corona. Eww. Don't judge, I was in college. I used to love sitting at the tables by the bathroom watching all the drunk yahoos in heels tripping over the trap door. As for the best time to go, a crowded night with rowdy sing-a-longs was just as much fun as a chill afternoon with hardly anyone around. Free popcorn and birthday shots are a bonus!
(4)
Laura B.
1. Free popcorn (SO GOOD SO GOOD SO GOOD) 2. Colorado Rootbeer 3. Baltimore Zoo 4. Alabama Slammer 5. BIG Coronas 6. The lunch speical (cheeseburger, fries, and soda (i should say "pop" - this is the midwest afterall) for like $6 7. The fishbowl upstairs ..... The list really goes on. Everyone has a story about this place. DRINK EM CUTE. I miss Purdue :(

(4)Tommy M.
(5)Matt L.
(5)Devin S.
Vintage Purdue tradition. For best results get about 6-8 or more peeps and lock down the fishbowl. Nice, interesting drinks. Probably only four stars on it's own merits, but gets a point tacked on for classic-ness.
(5)Adam C.
(4)Gail A.

(5)Brett M.
(4)Erik V.
(5)Nicky B.
(5)Dave T.
Double Jack and Coke....Amazing!
(4)k e.
Honestly it took until Feb 2007 until this place got reviewed? That says more to me regarding the quality of yelp then it does Harry's. I have a love hate thing going on here. I love it since I can get served before everyone else, I hate it because of everyone else.
(5)Maurilio M.
(4)Megan C.
(3)Brian A.
(4)Mike P.
Fun fun place on game day
(5)Laurel W.
(4)Amy D.
(2)Amanda W.
(1)Jennifer B.
(5)Amy J.
(4)Sharon K.
Double Cheeseburger special on Friday's for lunch is a regular event for those in my department. We look forward to our "lunch bunch" outings!
(4)Jason R.
(1)Bing B.
Dunno why the other reviewer gave Harry's a 1 star. While its true about what he said, its an institution. Like Cactus on Thursdays. That alone makes its a 5 star. Well that and the fact that everything thats not beer tastes like pure alcohol. Whats not to love.
(5)Amanda K.
Here is a toast (Ahem, please raise your glass and "go ugly early" with me!): For all the times I will remember forever, making memories, with some of the finest people I will never ever forget for a lifetime! ...CHEERS! *clink*
(5)Allison F.
I remember Harry's being the bar for all the rich Greek-life students. Not really my gig, but they had yummy (and expensive) drinks. My best friend was kicked out once for being too drunk on her 21st. That's about it. More for alums.
(3)Tom F.

(1)B L.

(4)Ashley H.
(5)Shawn P.
(5)Kade W.
Crowded on Friday nights, but good bartenders, cooks and atmosphere make up for it. Best tenderloin sammich I know of.
(4)D h.
Laziest review ever....it's old, it's a tradition, & it's worth a visit. To elaborate, Harry's is cramped, smells like stale beer, & awesome. Just go, at least once.
(4)Dayton B.
Come for the cheap booze. Stay for the tradition. Harry's is as integral to Lafayette as Purdue.
(4)Jay J.
(5)Shyam S.
(5)Michelle Q.
Harry's staff was excellent but there is NEVER enough seating to eat. It is a game of hovering over tables and ordering a quick bite. The 4 star was earned from the Newcastle on tap. Food was ok and the price is cheap. But messy so definitely wait til you are at a table
(4)Dru P.
(5)Joe M.
Fun place to go before the game. I went to the MI State / Purdue game. Had the wings, fries, homemade chips. GOOOOOD STUFF. You have to try the Long island. Tasty. It's just min from Mackey. You can't help but have fun.
(4)Matt R.
(4)Sara U.
The best college bar period. I had my first legal drink here and so did my dad. This is a Purdue institution. If you can drink 4+ long islands I'm very impressed with you. Pretty good wings and bar food. When I think of college I think of Harry's. Breakfast club here was some of the best times EVER.
(5)Paige W.
(5)Ryan H.
(5)Michael C.
Harry's is guaranteed fun. Coming here with friends on the weekends will be some of the most fun experiences I will ever have. The drinks are strong, a bit pricey compared to the other bars, but this place is a Purdue institution and is required during your stay in West Lafayette.
(5)Chris F.
Best beer in town! Try the pizza. And the chili. And the flounder. And the White Russian. Say HI to Nichole and Hershel!
(5)Tobias T.
(5)Supriya D.
(5)Cristie F.
(3)Katherine T.
(5)Kinsey C.
(4)Kimmi M.
(5)Matthew G.
(4)Lisa G.
(4)Brent H.
Overrated based on my experience. I think even the salads are fried. Uncomfortable seating. Service was mediocre.
(2)Curt L.
(5)Jackie L.
(5)Justin L.
(3)Kalee C.
MY FAVORITE BAR ON CAMPUS!! The banana pepper rings and black and bleu salad are may favorite thing to eat here. I also a must try drink a Baltimore Zoo.
(4)Drew K.
(5)Cindy L.
GO THERE IF UR VISITING. they have awesome flavored shots.
(5)Rich Y.
(5)Nathan J.
The food is OK. You can't beat the beer prices or the mixed drinks. I highly recomend the Greatefull Dead or the Baltamore Zoom
(5)Dallas C.
(5)Michele W.
(4)Michelle L.
(5)Marcie M.
(3)Roy H.
(5)Tiffany P.
(4)Betty R.
Harry's has been around a long time and is very popular with students, Purdue faculty, and locals. I've never had a bad meal there, and they serve the best wings you'll find anywhere. On a recent trip, my friend had the chicken taco salad and said it was the best one she'd ever had.
(5)Patricia N.
There a great lunch specials throughout the week. I came in for a burger one Friday. It was a tad greasy, but it was still delicious as it was washed down with a Baltimore Zoo.
(4)Kristen B.
(4)Juan A.
Very cool bar, cheap drinks, and amazing service... What else needs to be said??? The bartender was probably one of the nicest I have ever seen anywhere.... The place was busy but not really pack so you can move around. I will be going back anytime that I just want to have some drinks....
(4)Thu N.
(4)Brian B.
The best bar in the Midwest. Just shut up and go to Harry's.
(5)Trevor F.
(4)Brittany B.
A Purdue staple. It is always crowded on almost every night. Neat atmosphere with all the intials on the walls. Kind of expensive but they drinks are usually pretty strong.
(3)Joe Y.
(2)Bodie S.
(3)Ryan A.
Best bar in all the land...except when invaded with GDIs on the the weekend.
(5)Kourtney L.
(4)Laura B.
I miss Purdue :(
(5)Kurt C.
Best Bar in Indiana!
